Hermosa Beach Firefighters Respond to Help Save Hermosa Beach School Programs
Local Firefighters Association rallies support as June 19th deadline looms to raise over $500,000 to save educational programs for local elementary and middle schools.
“Excellence in Education Challenge” is a dual fundraising effort driven by the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and Hermosa Beach Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Each group is working diligently to raise the final funds needed to keep “at-risk” programs for the upcoming 2008-09 school year. These include jobs, class size reduction, libraries, music, science, art, physical education, and math programs.
The Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association (HBFA) is a non-profit membership organization comprised of professional firefighters and EMS personnel who serve the Hermosa Beach community. In response to the call for action by the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation, HBFA members voted to donate a portion of proceeds from a recent annual fundraiser to support efforts to keep key programs in the school district.
Says HBFA President, Brian Grebbien, “We support the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and PTO as they work to fight against the ongoing cut backs and alarming financial shortfalls in state and federal education funding. As firefighters and emergency response personnel, we are dedicated to on-going education initiatives. The HBFA will continue to partner with our community members to support “Excellence in Education Challenge” to raise awareness and increase funding to overcome these financial deficits.”
Upon hearing of the donation, Hermosa Beach School District Superintendent Dr. Sharon McClain expressed heartfelt gratitude, “We are all so grateful to the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association for their donation to help save our programs. It's a wonderful example of how the Hermosa Community works together.”
